An Inspiring Trip To Uganda

POSTED

Hello, I’ve decided to write a blog for my website, to keep you up to date with some of the interesting things I’m up to.

I wanted to tell you about my recent trip to Uganda for Comic Relief. This was my second time in Uganda with the charity, but this visit was quite different. While I knew what to expect, this time I was going to the positive side of Uganda to see the schools and various places that have started to benefit from the money that the Great British public (you!) have given to help the people there.

It was incredible to see the difference that the money is beginning to make.

We were with a charity called Water Aid, that Comic Relief partly fund, and they’d provided a huge water tank for a primary school called Kasasa Primary School. This 15,000 litre tank collects all the rain water from the schools’ gutters and provides a clean water supply for the school. I’d never seen anything so simple be so effective and for the first time these children were able to wash their hands, and drink clean water that they knew wouldn’t make them ill.

The biggest killer of under 5 year olds is diarrhoea, (bigger than AIDS, malaria and measles put together) and I think it’s shocking that something so simple to us, is such a horrific killer for them. So it was fantastic to see a new toilet block specifically for girls. I’d never considered this but, when these girls get to a certain age and begin to have their periods, they don’t want to go to school and use a dirty toilet so it puts them off from going to school entirely, and they drop out of education. Just a small change is now keeping a vast majority of girls going to school.

A water tank and a toilet; that was all it took to make this school the most perfect school ever – certainly in their eyes. Also educating young people to make sure they boil water to remove the bugs so they ‘d go back to pass the message on to their parents. Seeing this cycle in motion was fantastic.

On the second day we visited another school, which is waiting for same sort of funding to come through in order to build what we’d seen the day before. What we saw would have taken your breath away, just how horrendous the situation was.

There were a couple hundred children in this school, and they were all so grateful just to be there. But each day they’re walking for miles to fill up cans from a dirty drainpipe. So they’ve walked for an hour or so in the baking heat, knowing this water is all they have to drink but that it’s going to make them sick. It’s polluted sewage water, and yet, it’s all they’ve got. It was a huge contrast from one day to the next but it was incredible to think that the next time I come back here, hopefully, this school will be a very different place.

Uganda for me was once again another incredible trip. It was also a positive one; it’s wonderful to see the wheels in motion and how the money is spent. I think a lot of us donate, and you don’t see it first-hand, but I did see it first-hand and thought it was brilliant.

I met up with the girl Hajara, whom I’d met first time around, and find out more about the development of another Comic Relief funded agency called Nacwola, which is an organisation to help young women who have potentially been affected from HIV or AIDS, and their family.

They help young people who have been left behind because their parents have died. This young girl has had an incredibly tough life; lost her mum when she was 13; her dad disappeared and she was left with her five brothers and sisters. And here she is now; five years since I first met her, a beautiful young 22 year old woman.

It was a really emotional reunion and we had such a lovely afternoon together, talking for ages. She looked so much healthier and her brothers and sisters are in school. Her eldest sister is a prefect and head girl at her school, and she wants to be a lawyer, to defend children’s rights. I came away feeling like there is hope.

The first time I went there was a lack of hope, so that was a big thing.

The first time I went, I came away feeling incredibly down about it all for a long time because there was just no hope. And when I looked in to their eyes, particularly of Hajara, I thought “This poor girl has nowhere to go here”. But it was such a difference this time round. I came away feeling really optimistic and positive – it’s amazing how much a small donation can make so much difference.

It was great to see the good work in action, and  a really, really positive trip.

Christine to host Dancing On Ice: Going For Gold

POSTED

It’s been a big secret, but we can confirm that Christine and Philip will be rink side for a very special Olympic-themed Dancing On Ice.

Ice panel Robin Cousins, Katarina Witt and Louie Spence will be casting their eye over a selection of Olympic greats who’ll all be taking to the ice for the first time.

The stars going head to head include (deep breath!) silver medal-winning hurdler Colin Jackson CBE, ‘mother of gymnastics’ and winner of 4 gold and 2 silver medals Olga Korbut, gold medal javelin thrower Tessa Sanderson CBE, gold medal-winning sailor Pippa Wilson MBE, silver medal relay runner Jamie Baulch, gold medal-winning rower Steve Williams OBE, and silver medal badminton player Gail Emms MBE.

As always, Torvill and Dean will be there to offer guidance to the new skaters, and Dancing On Ice judge Robin will be taking to the ice to perform a solo routine for first time in twelve years!

So it’s tracksuits off, and sequins on, as our Olympic heroes perform on the ice for the first time in front of a live studio audience.

Christine and Jack launch new fitness campaign!

POSTED

It was yet another energetic day for Christine yesterday (March 7) as she pulled on her trainers in London to be named a brand ambassador for Reebok’s revolutionary CrossFit crusade.

She and self-confessed adrenaline junkie Jack Osbourne joined forces to support the drive to help the public get fit with their friends and family.

Christine said, “I’ve never experienced fitness quite like this before. CrossFit is a shorter, more intense workout and you really feel like you’ve worked your whole body.”

As you can see from the photo, Christine wasn’t just spectating, but also hosted a workout alongside Jack in the shadow of Tower Bridge.
